PCL : The Green Build

As part of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s Green Build program, this joint-venture, design-build contract covered both the Terminal 2 expansion and 1.5 million square feet of new taxiways and aprons. The 445,000-square-foot expansion of Terminal 2 accommodates 10 new gates, and concession space expanded to more than 149,000 square feet. This new area features a 300-foot-long, 2.5-story, glass-enclosed hall called Sunset Cove.

The Green Build project achieved LEED Platinum, and was delivered using a progressive design-build approach that enabled close collaboration between the Airport Authority and the joint-venture partnership. This approach allowed construction to start even while the highly specialized design was still in progress.

The San Diego Airport Authority had a major focus to involve local contractors and vendors wherever possible to make this project a community effort.

This complex project utilized extensive use of new design and construction technologies. A comprehensive Building Information Model (BIM) was developed, detailing nearly every system and assembly in the building from the architecture and structure to the complex baggage handling systems. The PCL team also implemented interactive white boards, web conferencing, web-hosted record drawings, a paperless submittal process, a WIFI-enabled jobsite, and field staff with tablet PCs. The tablets granted PCL staff access to the entire document set and BIM model at all times, allowing the team to maximize quality and productivity in the field.
